Canopy beds originated in medieval times. Servants often slept in the same room as the noblemen and women that they served, so they decided to add canopies and curtains to their beds to provide privacy and warmth. The servants slept on pallets, trundle beds or benches which must have been very uncomfortable. The lord and lady’s canopy bed also served as a status symbol, it reflected their social standing in society to guests who stayed at the castle. Many Kings even had special canopy beds in which they held court. Louis XIV liked to hold court in a luxurious State bed with an ornate wooden cover and drapes of gorgeous silk or damask.

The lower classes soon followed the example of the nobility because they wanted to emulate their opulent lives and started adding these elegant beds to their bedrooms.

There are many different types of canopy beds. The most elegant are probably the Victorian-style ones with heavy wood-carvings or wrought iron posts. There are also French provincial beds with mahogany posts or white posts and curtains. Some of the wrought-iron beds are hand-forged.
